Study Reveals that Chronic Stress and Depression Can Trigger Bone Loss

The results have been announced by Holger Henneicke of the University of Sydney at the 43rd annual congress of the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS). During the event, Henneicke described how the study examined the impact of chronic stress on skeletal metabolism and structure in mice. The study specifically examined the signals of a particular hormone being disrupted, which was suspected as being the link between chronic stress and bone loss.

 

“We know stress and depression are linked to poor bone health but not how one results in the other, so we set out to determine the role played by stress hormones, known as glucocorticoids, in the cells which synthesize bone,” said Dr. Henneicke.

 

Dr. Henneicke also stated, “Eight-week-old male and female mice were exposed to chronic, but mild stress. In some mice, the glucocorticoid signaling was selectively disrupted in bone-forming osteoblasts, while their littermates were left ‘wild.’”

 

Henneicke’s study concluded that the male mice experienced bone loss due to chronic stress, while the female mice did not have the same results. He also specified that further research would need to be conducted to understand how females are influenced by chronic stress.
